That fuck-mothering internet. (Site Redesign)

Fri Jul 18, 2008, 8:20 AM
  • Mood: Exhilarated
  • Listening to: William Shatner (I am so not kidding.)
  • Reading: The Satanic Verses - Salman Rushdie
  • Watching: Avatar
  • Playing: Guitar Hero 1 through 3
  • Eating: Toenails
  • Drinking: Peach Spritzer
Oh god. What the hell is that? Why, when I click this, does that happen? Where are these lists of links coming from? Why, when I want there to be fewer links, are more links coming into existence? Are they breeding like some hideous fungus? Now what? Woah, woah, woah; sweet child of mine. Why is that blinking? Why doesn't this plug-in work? Why does my comic look like a bad blog? How do I change the title? Where do I insert JPEGs? My foot hurts. WHERE DID ALL THOSE GOD-DAMN BUTTONS COME FROM?!

I haven't written a journal in a while, and I'm not sure if anyone bothers to read these anymore. Anyway. I'm now in the process of trying to redesign my website; tearing away all the musculature and inserting a brand new skeleton and nervous system based on Wordpress.

It is a fucking nightmare. I installed Comicpress, which works on top of Wordpress to give a semi-customisable layout that operates similarly to a blog, navigation and update-wise. The ultimate aim is to make updating my site more pleasant and convenient, as it currently takes up to 45 minutes to rewrite the html every single time.

However, a single problem has made itself quite apparent. It squats on top of my success, like a wicked dragon guarding its treasure.

There are no instructions on how to use Comicpress.

Short of the installation instructions, there is no how-to, no read-me, no faq, no fucking help to speak of. Now, usually I would just start poking away at the interface, trying to figure it out, and believe me, poke I did. For HOURS. The thing is, though, is that Comicpress is essentially a way of tricking Wordpress into doing what you want it to. So you have to know exactly what you want to do, and how to do it, before you trying doing it. So there's not a lot of room for experimentation.

I'm rambling here, but rest assured it's a proper pisser. I'm commissioning a mate of mine to do all the work for me now, while I sit back and work on the next step for reinvigorating my interest in my comic: flagrant self-promotion.

The one thing I've never properly worked on is advertising. I always said I'd wait until I'd been at it at least a year before I started to whore myself about the ghettos of the web. The first step in this mission is guest comics. If he'll take it, I've got one in the works for Scott Ramsoomair (VG CATS) and then one for Jeff Jaques (Questionable Content). I'll be posting these on the site and on DeviantArt as soon as they're done, regardless of whether they get published or not. Possibly in a different section.

New stuff planned for the site:

- Comic on front page (finally)
- RSS feeds
- Reviews
- Scraps / Portfolio
- mini strips (B/W)
- Calendar archive
- Seperate comments pages
- More Updates (GASP)
- other shit.

If anyone knows where I can find a concise list of instructions for Comicpress, let me know.

Has anyone ever noticed that the Pope rides around in a car protected by six inches of bullet-proof plexiglass? That's a real example of faith in action. You think God loves us all, right? You're his right-hand man. His fucking emissary. But what? You don't trust him to protect you from getting shot? Where the hell is your faith now? Shit - If you're the Pope and you get shot, wouldn't you just assume that's God's plan? What a fucking stupid arsehole.
